When SNAP Stops, We Step Up: NourishNC’s Plan to Feed Families
- Due to the government shutdown, SNAP benefits will not be issued in November and possibly beyond.
- That means that 23,000 of our neighbors in NHC will struggle to afford a basic necessity – food.
- Nationally, 39% of SNAP recipients are children. If we use that percentage to estimate locally, 8,970 children will lose access to the food they need to thrive.
- Simply put, local kids and families may struggle to put food on the table as we head into the holiday season.
NourishNC is not going to let that happen. Here is what we are doing.
- Anticipating increased demand: We expect a significant rise in need across all our programs.
- NourishNC has already begun proactively staging supplies: Our team has already begun purchasing more frozen meat, nonperishable food, and program supplies. These resources will help local families whether or not SNAP benefits are affected.
- Coordinating with partners: We’re meeting with NHCS, local government, faith-based organizations, nonprofits, and our partner network to ensure a unified community response.
- Staying Adaptive: We’ll continue to monitor the situation closely and share updates as they develop.
- Calling on Our Community: Please consider supporting NourishNC, local food pantries, and neighbors who may be struggling. Check out nourishnc.org for all the ways you can help.
Our message is simple: NourishNC will be here for the kids and families who need us, no matter what. But we can’t do it alone.
